Genista Wines
Barossa Valley , South Australia
Genista Wines is a husband-and-wife team, Lloyd Broom and Sarah Gregory. We bought our single vineyard in the southern Barossa Valley in 2014, and our first vintage was the 2017 ‘Taking the Mickie’ Shiraz. Today we manage 7 acres: 6 acres of 30-year-old Shiraz and 1 acre of 80-year-old Grenache on our neighbours’ block, making six wines from these two varieties.
The name ‘Genista’ comes from the plant of the same name, with its common name being ‘Broom’. A long running family joke – instead of being ‘The Brooms’, we would sometimes refer to ourselves as ‘The Genistas’ when feeling fancy!
Our labels tell our story. ‘Taking the Mickie’ Shiraz honours Lloyd’s father, Michael, who has helped prune the vineyard every year since we bought it. ‘Duck, Duck, Cat’ Grenache celebrates the local Barossa Wildlife Rescue, which we support with a donation from every bottle sold. ‘Island’ Rosé is for everyone who helped get Genista off the ground. ‘Noble’ Sparkling Shiraz reflects on Sarah’s family history and the search for our version of gold in the Barossa. ‘The SG’ Shiraz Grenache is named after Sarah, who moved interstate so Lloyd could follow his dream. And ‘Peritia Tempore’ Shiraz, meaning ‘knowledge gained over time’, marks our first ten years and everything we’ve learned season after season.
Our philosophy hasn’t changed since 2017: grow the best fruit we can, handle the wines as little as possible, and bottle wines that show varietal character, texture and balance.

Lloyd got into wine in his early twenties as a Premium Wine Manager for Coles Group, where trade nights put him in front of producers. In 2010 he started a Bachelor of Viticulture and Winemaking at TAFE, and after moving to the Barossa Valley in 2015 he worked vintages at Schild Estate and Jim Barry Wines in the Clare Valley. He then spent several years at Dutschke Wines, a small family-owned winery where he got stuck into everything from the cellar to marketing. After years of running Genista on the side, Lloyd went all in on the business in 2024. He’s happiest in the winery, knee-deep in grapes, but also loves getting out on the road to share the wines.
